چکیده
AIM To assess the seroprevalence of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in Croatia. METHODS During 2005, a total of 137 serum specimens from Croatian patients aged from 6 days to 51 years, without respiratory symptoms, were collected at the Croatian National Institute of Public Health. The sera were examined using the indirect immunofluorescent assay. RESULTS The overall hMPV seropositivity rate in the samples tested was 77.4% (106/137). The seropositivity rate increased from 18.7% in children aged between 6 months and 1 year to 100% in people older than 20 years of age. The highest proportion of titers > or =1:512 was found in children aged from 1 to 2 years. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that hMPV infection is present in Croatia, with primary infection occurring in early childhood. This is the first study that indicates the circulation of hMPV in Croatia.

Human metapneumovirus is known to be similar to respiratory syncytial virus. Because of an incomplete protective immune response to new genotypes, re-infection occurs frequently, especially in the elderly. However, the clinical manifestations of human metapneumovirus need to be further characterized in adults. A 73-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with acute dyspnea, chest discomf...

Background First identified in 2001, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a novel pathogen and causative agent of acute respiratory tract infection. Re-infection with hMPV is common, and currently there is no available vaccine against this virus. Two genetic subgroups (A and B) have been identified, both of which can be divided further into at least two distinct sub-lineages. Here we report the resu...
متن کاملIncrease Human Metapneumovirus Mediated Morbidity following Pandemic Influenza Infection
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a recently discovered respiratory pathogen, infecting mainly young children. The infected patients suffer from influenza like symptoms (ILS). In Israel the virus is mainly circulating in February to March. Here we report on an increased rate of hMPV infection in the winter season of 2009-10. The 2009-10 infection had several unique characteristics when compared t...

In the two years since its discovery the dinical characteristics of this new virus have been darified. In children, especially those younger than one year of age, hMPV is responsible for 5 to 10% of respiratory tract infections requiring hospitalisation; its clinical course...
